Vivendo em Miami / Living in Miami

See you!

I’m an architect and interior designer and businesswoman, living in Miami for two years. Now I will tell you a little bit about this city from my point of view. Miami is far from being only an area that surrounds Downtown. It’s a big area South and West, which has 34 incorporated cities, many of them out of the traditional touristic circuit.

The majority of Brazilians that visit Miami prefer to rent a car, rather than use the public transport. Here starts a very different Journey. Here, for example, many of you may already know, we have fill up our own tank. Sometimes it’s a bit complicated, depending the type of the pump, but at the end everything will work out. Someone who doesn’t have an American card, or who wants to pay in cash, has to enter the store to pay, say the number of the pump and then release the petrol. If you have paid more them your tank’s capacity they will return you the change. The price of the petrol changes from one station to the other, but one which has a great price is RaceTrac, and is always worthwhile.

To start our column, I must tell about one of the most well-known parts, with spectacular architecture: Coral Gables. It was one of the first planned districts in Miami that precedes the particular condominium development and the landowners’ association. It’s famous for rigorous zone laws and was developed during the real estate “Boom” of Florida on the 20’s. This spot architecture is almost of the Revival Mediterranean style. During the same time this district has been choosen to be the seat of Miami University (MU).

Well-known as “Beautiful City”, it’s a destination for pedestrians, with a free Trolley service, offered by the city. With giant and fantantisc palm trees, it’s one of the most desired and traditional districts of the region.

Among a lot of interesting points, the Miracle Mile is an unmissable destination. There is a boulevard that has 1.5 Km of stores and restaurants, including a paradise for bride-to-be’s looking for their wedding dream dress. I did this tour once some time ago with a friend that came from São Paulo to buy her dress; it was very exciting and enchanting.

We also have in Coral Gables the Cocoplum, which is without a doubt one of the most exclusive real estate communities of all Miami. There were private condominiums with yacht club on the coast of Biscayne Bay. The mansions have huge lands and the majority with direct bay access. It’s fantastic!

Lastly, the Village of Merick Park, which I frequented for a long time, because my English school (Kaplan International), was located in front of it, there is a beautiful shopping also situated in this district, with an enjoyable environment of a central square that has a lot of restaurants and a beautiful garden. There we can find the Villagio, that offers the same cuisine of Carpaccio (in Bal Haurbor), Italian food, excellent service, and fair price. Some stores here are right up my alley, like the Liapela, having wonderful baby products with the most new tendencies of baby stroller and other wonders and the Janie & Jack store with an amazing infant clothes collection. I enjoy these stores a lot with my daughter Luiza, although she is leaving this age group. The Neiman Marcus is another store that I love, as it contains great options for parties dress.

That’s all for today! I will try to speak about architecture, design and art in general, and also inform you how to get by on your own in this wonderful city. See you!
